This film ends all too abruptly, and fans of the Tolkien masterpeice must be warned that Peter Jackson's trilogy is way better. There are too many mistakes, Saruman is too often called 'Aruman', Celeborn is pronounced 'Seleborn', the balrog in Moria is able to fly (?!), and there too many more, irritating, errors in this film. It's not the stuff for hardcore Tolkien fans.

By far the best of all the current presentations to date. I especialy enjoyed the performance of Tom Bombadil (can not remember the actors name ). Also the stunning atmosperic portrayal of the Barrow Downs really sent a sliver of ice up my spine. The soundtrack is stunning I would put it up with classics such as Starwars and Gladiator but more then likey the dirty dozen is where the sound came from.
It will be an up hill battle for the current movie to push this gem out of its rightful place as the greatest film in history.

I love the books and the recent movies, but I hated the cartoon. If you've read the books you'll realize that the cartoon does them no justice, but if you haven't read the books you won't understand the cartoon. Also in afew scenes the cartoon images are spliced with real people. (although this can be forgiven because of limited technology in 1978. Overall I give it two stars.

Peter Jackson's is better. Sam is too ugly. And dumb. Sam shouldn't be dumb. I bet Boromir has fleas in that beard.

I recently viewed the 70s animated 'Lord of The Rings' film and found it to be both enchanting and exiting. Although it doesn't include 'The Return of The King' and varies a lot from the books, it is good quality entertainment. The Ring Wraiths are depicted well and are scarier at times than Peter Jacksons version and many of the characters are realisticly portrayed and actually interesting. Frodo has charisma and backbone! I was amazed to see just exactly how much material has been identically reproduced in Peter Jackson's multi million dollar 'Lord of The Rings' and 'The Two Towers'. From the beginning of the film to the end just about every scene is the same, right down to the settings, characters accents and appearance. Gollum is even identical - but more likable as he spends less time screaming 'Precious'. It seems to be happening time and time again in todays B grade (cash grabbing) movie industry - just when you think something original has come along you find out it's a complete ripoff. This is more than mere coincidence and appears PJ is not so talented after all. No wonder all the LOTR fans are screaming bloody murder and trying to push this little cartoon gem under the rug! Definitely check out this animated classic as it is a great tribute J.R. Tolkeins work and is an enjoyable film.
P.S. The game is up Jacko....
