It’s tough to reason Ridley Scott’s large epic won’t turn the cinematic norm of the Crusades for years to come. Kingdom of Heaven is larger than the total of the parts, delivering a vital, often fascinating story following Balian (Orlando Bloom), a waste French blacksmith who discovers he’s a eminent successor and takes his father’s (Liam Neeson) place in the core of the star circa 1184: Jerusalem. Here, grand battles and backdoor governing body have been key as Scott and first-time screenwriter William Monahan conform an glorious storyline to plunge into the centuries-long conflict. Two forward-thinking kings, Baldwin (Edward Norton in an uncredited nonetheless estimable role) and Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), reason an nervous equal in between Christians (who reason the city) and Muslims whilst factions champ at the bit for blood. There have been great and evildoers on both sides, with the Knights Templar receiving the brunt of the blame; Balian skeleton to find his essence whilst safeguarding Baldwin and the people. The demeanour of the film, as scarcely all is from Scott, is impressive: his CGI-infused conflict scenes opposition the LOTR array and, with cinematographer John Mathieson, emanate postcard beauty with snow white French forests and the immeasurable dried (filmed in Morocco and Spain). An glorious ancillary cast, together with Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and David Thewlis, additionally assistance have the head and heart of the movie work. Many critics forked out which Bloom doesn’t have the gravitas of Russell Crowe in the lead (then again, who does?), but it’s the dull impression and not the actress which hurts the movie and impacts the power. Balian isn’t since most some-more to do than be gloomy and give an occasional big speech, to one side his confusing abilities for crusade strategy and his erratic dignified compass (whose solitary role seems to be to put a love stage in the movie). Note: all the vital characters solely Neeson’s have been formed on fact, but most have been heavily fictionalized. –Doug Thomas

I should send Orlando Bloom a bill for the cost of this film and the time I spent watching it. The dialoge is uber-cheesy and the plot line very difficult to coherently comprehend. Don’t waste your time on this film.

  2. I apologize for rating a set that I haven’t watch. I am sure it deserves 5 stars. I bought the first Kingdom of Heaven. My 1 star rate is a form of protest. I am holding a lot of purchases waiting for the special editions. This is business and I understand they try to sell me almost the same product 2 or 3 times, but I would be happy if they could launch always both versions together. Or at least advise a Director’s cut or a SE is coming. May be there is a web page I am missing. I am sorry but I am NOT buying this set. I will wait for the HD DVD or Blu Ray version. You guys better hurry up with the high definition thing because I am cutting my dvd purchases right now.

I am sorry. This movie was terrible. It was offensive to Muslims and Christians alike. In our time, when the conflict with certain Muslim tribes in the Middle East and the mainstream American Christianity, this film only stirs up hatred and enmity. I hope to god this doesnt ever happen again. We are civilized and peaceful not like these people in the movie. If the movie were released in the 90′s (like the same year as Braveheart) then it would have been fine. I thought this movie was violent, gory, tasteless and totally offensive.

Muhammed Zaida and other reviewers who have pointed out the movie’s general historical flaws (aww, heck, let’s just admit it, lack of history), have actually been quite restrained.

You could, literally fill pages with the historical and social errors of this film, which are, like Aleksander Nevskiy, more a reflection on the people making the film, than of the subject. Where AN was Russian “Big Slavic Brother” nationalism via the Soviets, this movie is the last great gasp of politically-correct multiculturalism.

    this film features
    a)bad acting
b)clarifications that supposedly fix the character flaws, but in actuality, make them *worse*
c)a quick trip to totally misunderstanding the crusades
d)shiny costumes that are surprisingly good for a Hollywood movie
    e)some nice fight scenes.
f)powerfully-directed modern propaganda (the purpose of the film)

I intend to buy extra copies so that I can listen to my (medieval archaeologist) wife scream. But take anybody who gives this 4 or 5 stars a serious look-see — it’s likely they’re better suited to reviewing pablum like XXX instead.

This movie does look like it will be an excellent film.
I understand that the group ,SAVAE, may have a song called “Rannanu” possibly be used in this film as well. They have great music. Worth checking out the rest of cd “Ancient Echoes” where this song came from.
