  1. Rarely have I been inspired by a terrible film to go to the computer to write a review, but JATA features a leaden script, amateur acting, and the most horrible special effects I’ve ever seen in a major motion picture. I would have thought that technology was far enough along in 1963 to make FX that seem as technologically advanced as all the other technology at the time. The Wizard of Oz, which came a quarter century earlier, is lightyears ahead of this film. The FX are downright embarassing, not much more than Davy and Goliath or Gumby.

The story is just a literal interpretation of the Greek stories, including heavy borrowing from Homer and the playrights, with the ethical, moral and religious lessons largely extracted.

I had to turn it off about 45 minutes through. It might be scary enough to impress young children, and the myths carry some primeval power to get inside your head, but the real power of the myths is due to Homer, Aeschylus and Euripides’ great literary power, which is completely lacking in this hollywood claptrap version.

  2. WWWWWeeeww! Man that acting smells! I thought there was a dead animal somewhere in my house but the acting! Wretched acting! Seriously though, nobody should see this movie unless they are only doing it to re-live some nostalgic memories or for the amazing stop-motion work of hollywood bum turned genius Ray Harryhausen. Good show gentle sir!

  3. Of course this movie from 1963 is a CLASSIC….and a “must own” for Harryhausen fans…but NOT worth the extra expense in Blu-Ray. Seeems the studio did NOTHING to improve the picture clarity. Looks NO different than my DVD…. However, the sound is much improved. Grainy picture throughout…can’t convince me this is 1080p. If I could I would return the Blu-Ray for a refund.

This movie is not as good as my childhood recollections. Visually, it suffers from a very unmagical TV blandness (except for Harryhausen’s stop-action, which is still an f/x high bar). A lot of the acting is really appalling. Todd Armstrong plays Jason as a boring prig with tiny eyes and a voice that seems dubbed from a spaghetti western. Makes you wish they had cast someone like William Shatner (but the movie’s look is already too “Star Trek”). Herrman’s score is great. But I prefer the memories…
